Old Orchard Gazebo Series: Screening on July 2

I’m proud to announce “Old Dog, New Trick” a documentary film I co-produced about my dad, Steve Scorfina, will be screening FOR FREE on July 2 at the Old Orchard Gazebo Series at 9 pm.

“Old Dog, New Trick” follows Steve Scorfina’s life in and out of the St. Louis music scene. Starting with his time in the R&B flavored Mike & The Majestics (Featuring Michael McDonald), Scorfina found himself playing in a wide array of musically outfits throughout the 60s and 70s, including the psychedelic Good Feellin’ and an early blues-rock incarnation of REO Speedwagon. His musical career culminated in the progressive art rock sounds of Pavlov’s Dog, a group that made it to the brink of stardom in 1975 scoring a platinum album, but suffered a devilish manager who cast them into near obscurity shortly thereafter. The film picks up with a middle-aged Scorfina, now a lovable antiques salesman, attempting to restart his musical career at 60.

The film was voted as one of the ten most anticipated films of the 2009 St. Louis International Film Festival. If you didn’t get a chance to see it at SLIFF or when it screened at the Northern Arts Council, please come out to downtown Webster Grooves were it is showing absolutely FREE.

The Old Dog himself will be performing with his band from 7 until 8:30 pm. I might even sit in and play a few songs. Co-Director Thomas Crone and myself will be there to introduce the film, which begins at 9 pm.

March 6: Showing of "Old Dog" plus Two Concerts

I’m very proud to announce that the North City Arts Council has contacted the filmmakers of “Old Dog, New Trick” and scheduled an additional St. Louis screening. On March 6, 2010 at 7pm, “Old Dog, New Trick” will screen at the historic Savoy Theatre (formally the Crown Theatre) in Ferguson, MO. A Q&A will follow the film with Co-Director Thomas Crone and producer Jon Scorfina. The “Old Dog” Steve Scorfina will also perform his current CD “Dog Trax” in its entirety after the film.

“Old Dog, New Trick” follows Steve Scorfina’s life in and out of the St. Louis music scene. The Savoy Theatre is located at 119 S. Florissant Rd in Ferguson, MO, just a few blocks away from the legendary carriage house where Pavlov’s Dog wrote the bulk of their first two albums. Talk about coming full circle!

As an added bonus, The Good Feellin’ will be reuniting for the first time in 40 years to play a few songs. If you didn’t have a chance to see the film last November in the St. Louis International Film Festival, don’t miss you chance to see it in the community where it all started.

Tickets will be $10.00.

But what's often overlooked is the vibrant local scene of the 1970s, when the nascent KSHE-95 helped birth the AOR radio format and gave a home to a wide slew of St. Louis-based rock bands. A pair of new documentaries screening during this year's St. Louis International Film Festival aims to change that oversight."

Not sure it's the most complimentary description ever, but (hey!) press is press is press. Joe Williams of the Post-Dispatch cites the duo as "Best Documentary About a '70s Footnote," in a recent edition of GO.

Mike Steinberg, director of the Webster University Film Series, will be interviewed tomorrow on KSDK-TV (Channel 5) regarding two films he co-directed with fellow School of Communications faculty member Thomas Crone. The films, "Old Dog New Trick" and "The Pride of Saint Louis," will be screened Friday night at 7 p.m. as part of the St. Louis International Film Festival.

The television interview will broadcast tomorrow at 5:55 a.m., 6:40 a.m. and at noon.

KDHX music show Silver Tray will host a live set by Pat Liston, on Friday, September 18. The songwriter of Mama's Pride will perform four songs, starting at 12:20 p.m. If you're unable to listen to the show, hosted by Thomas Crone, you can listen to the show as streaming audio for two weeks following the live broadcast.
